The King's Ring

The only thing you can rely on is that you can't rely on anything
by Theodore Tilton

I.
Once in Persia reigned a King,
Who upon his signet ring
Graved a maxim true and wise,
Which, if held before his eyes,
Gave him counsel, at a glance,
Fit for every change or chance:
Solemn words, and these are they:
"'Even this shall pass away!'"

II.
Trains of camels through the sand
Brought him gems from Samarcand;
Fleets of galleys through the seas
Brought him pearls to rival these.
But he counted little gain
Treasures of the mine or main.
"What is wealth?" the King would say;
"'Even this shall pass away.'"

III.
In the revels of his court,
At the zenith of the sport,
When the palms of all his guests
Burned with clapping at his jests,
He, amid his figs and wine,
Cried, "O loving friends of mine!
Pleasure comes, but not to stay:
'Even this shall pass away.'"

IV.
Lady fairest ever seen
Was the bride he crowned his queen.
Pillowed on the marriage-bed,
Whispering to his soul, he said,
"Though a bridegroom never pressed
Dearer bosom to his breast,
Mortal flesh must come to clay:
'Even this shall pass away.'"

V.
Fighting on a furious field,
Once a javelin pierced his shield.
Soldiers with a loud lament
Bore him bleeding to his tent.
Groaning from his tortured side,
"Pain is hard to bear," he cried,
"But with patience day by day,
'Even this shall pass away.'"

VI.
Towering in the public square
Twenty cubits in the air,
Rose his statue carved in stone.
Then the King, disguised, unknown,
Gazing at his sculptured name,
Asked himself,"And what is fame?
Fame is but a slow decay:
'Even this shall pass away.'"

VII.
Struck with palsy, sere and old,
Waiting at the Gates of Gold,
Spake he with his dying breath,
"Life is done, but what is Death?"
Then, in answer to the King,
Fell a sunbeam on his ring,
Showing by a heavenly ray --
"Even this shall pass away."

"A man of words and not of deeds"

The only thing you can rely on is that you can't rely on anything
A man of words and not of deeds
Is like a garden full of weeds
And when the weeds begin to grow
It's like a garden full of snow
And when the snow begins to fall
It's like a bird upon the wall
And when the bird away does fly
It's like an eagle in the sky
And when the sky begins to roar
It's like a lion at the door
And when the door begins to crack
It's like a stick across your back
And when your back begins to smart
It's like a penknife in your heart
And when your heart begins to bleed
You're dead, and dead, and dead indeed.

Я-то думала, что мне не нравится Матисс, а тут внезапно выяснилось, что его красочность не так уж безвкусна. Это на меня весна так действует.

- But did you ever make a big mistake? Or a huge one that could change your life? What about that?
- Well, I know I made a lot of mistakes...but I don't regret making any of them.
- How come?
- Because if I hadn't have made them, I wouldn't have learned how to make things right.

- Was bedeutet die Bewunderung?

Buried the ashes of someone
Broken by the strain

Where the heart is

The only thing you can rely on is that you can't rely on anything
You tell them that our lives can change with every breath we take. We both know that. And you tell them to let go of what’s gone. Because men like Roger Briscoe never win. And you tell them to hold on like hell to what they’ve got. Each other, and a mother who would die for them, and almost did. You tell them we’ve all got meanness in us, but we’ve got goodness too. And the only thing worth living for is the good. That is why we’ve got to make sure we pass it on.

Why does anyone lie? Cause we're scared or crazy, maybe just cause we're mean. But sometimes you tell a lie so big that it changes your whole life. Lie so big it makes you think. I guess there's a million reasons to lie, and I might've told that many . . . but none like that. I guess there's always that one lie we never get over.

Натали Портман потрясающе сыграла. Очень добрый и жизнеутверждающий фильм.

The trail's end

The only thing you can rely on is that you can't rely on anything

You've heard the story of Jesse James
Of how he lived and died
If you're still in need
Of something to read
Here's the story of Bonnie and Clyde.

Now Bonnie and Clyde are the Barrow gang
I'm sure you all have read
How they rob and steal
And those who squeal
Are usually found dyin' or dead.

They call them cold-hearted killers
They say they are heartless and mean
But I say this with pride
That I once knew Clyde
When he was honest and upright and clean.

But the laws fooled around
Kept takin' him down
And lockin' him up in a cell
Till he said to me: "I'll never be free
So I'll meet a few of them in Hell."

If a policeman is killed in Dallas
And they have no clue to guide
If they can't find a fiend
They just wipe their slate clean
And hang it on Bonnie and Clyde

If they try to act like citizens
And rent them a nice little flat
About the third night
They're invited to fight
By a sub-guns' rat-a-tat-tat.

Some day, they'll go down together
They'll bury them side by side
To a few, it'll be grief
To the law, a relief
But it's death for Bonnie and Clyde.
